Billionaire Elon Musk has expressed his support for Donald Trump, who was recently re-elected as president of the United States, to annex the Danish-controlled island of Greenland.
Musk announced the decision via social media on January 12, 2025.
He said, “I believe that the people of Greenland who want to be part of the United States and be independent are welcome.”
Musk’s comments come after Trump said that annexing Greenland is an important and necessary national security measure.
Trump first raised the issue in 2019. He returned to it again on January 7, 2025, expressing his desire for the island to be annexed by the United States, and saying that he does not expect to withdraw the long-standing US military presence in Greenland.
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has rejected the idea of selling the island to the United States, but has said he is open to talks with Trump, and has expressed a desire for independence from American or Danish control.
Greenland, home to about 60,000 people, hosts a U.S. military base and is a key NATO military asset due to its strategic location on the northern shipping lanes. These routes are becoming increasingly congested due to climate change.
Greenlanders also have a desire for full independence. A 2019 poll found that 67.8% of the population wants the island to become an independent country within the next 20 years.
