The Hamas leadership announced that an Israeli airstrike killed one of its top political leaders, Salah al-Bardaweel, south of the Gaza city of Khan Younis.
In a statement released on March 23, 2025, Hamas said that Bardaweel, 66, was killed in the missile strike while praying with his wife.
The Israeli government has not commented on the death of Bardaweel, who was considered one of Hamas’ top political leaders.
Health authorities in Khan Younis reported that 18 people had been killed in the Hamas-controlled area as of March 23.
Israel resumed its heavy bombardment of Gaza earlier this week, shortly after the first phase of the ceasefire ended.
Israel accuses Hamas of not releasing all the Israelis it has kidnapped.
Hamas accuses Israel of violating the terms of the agreement they reached in Qatar.
Bardaweel had eight children and was also the deputy to Hamas’s General Secretary, Yahya Sinwar, who was also killed.
