The Deputy Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Forces, Amir Baram, announced that he will not leave his post until February 2025.
In a letter to the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Forces, Herzl Halevi, Amir Baram said that he feels the time has come for him to step down from the post he has held for two and a half years.
He cited the waning intensity of the conflict between Israel and Hamas as well as his declining physical capabilities.
He said, “Given the current situation and the limited ability to continue to fulfill my duties as Deputy Chief of Staff, I no longer have the desire to continue in this position for the next three to four years.”
However, Baram added that he is ready to contribute to other positions in the military whenever necessary.
Baram is said to be seeking the position of Chief of Staff rather than deputy chief and has hinted that he wants to replace Herzl Halevi, who is said to have been eyeing him for days.
Those considered to be possible replacements for Baram include Gen Maj Tamil Yadai and Gen Maj Uri Gordin, who currently commands the Northern Command.
His resignation comes as Israel continues its offensive in Gaza, where it has already killed 32 Palestinians in a 48-hour offensive.
After Israel launched a massive offensive on Gaza in an attempt to wipe out Hamas, which had launched an offensive on October 7, 2023, the attacks have killed 46,000 Palestinians and injured more than 109,000.
