Greenland’s Prime Minister, MĂște Bourup Egede, said he was ready to talk to Donald Trump, who recently said the United States wants to take over the island, indicating that Greenlanders want independence rather than being part of Denmark or the United States.
On January 7, 2025, Trump said that Greenland is important to the United States for national security reasons.
He said he did not expect to withdraw the long-standing US military presence in Greenland because it could be used to take over the territory or for other means such as expansion.
During a press conference on January 8, 2024, in Copenhagen with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Minister MĂște Egede was asked if he had spoken to Trump. “No, but we are ready to talk.”
When asked about Trump’s refusal to withdraw US troops from Greenland, Minister Egede said that Trump was persistent, but “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” but stressed that international cooperation is important and that they will continue to work with the United States in the future.
Greenland was previously ruled by Denmark since 1979, when it gained independence through a referendum in 2009.
In an interview with reporters, Egede said that what they want is to be an independent country rather than being under the rule of others, and many people see this.
He continued by saying that “We do not want to be Danes, we do not want to be Americans, we want to be ourselves,” and also announced that elections to remain an independent country would be held soon.
