US President Donald Trump has said he could impose sanctions on Russia if it refuses to hold talks with Ukraine to end the war.
During a press conference on January 22, 2025, Trump was asked if the US would impose additional sanctions if President Vladimir Putin refused to hold talks with Ukraine, and he said it was “likely.”
During his campaign for president, Trump criticized Biden for his support for Ukraine in the war it has been waging with Russia since 2022.
The president said the US should not be giving Ukraine more aid than the European Union (EU).
“We are $200 billion more than the European Union in aid to Ukraine. What are we? Are we corrupt? The answer is yes.”
He continued by saying that he is doing everything possible to talk to President Putin so that this war can end.
He said, “We are talking to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, and soon we will talk to the President of Russia, Putin, and then we will see how it goes.”
President Trump said that Putin is smart and the reason he started the war in Ukraine was because he had underestimated Biden.
The Head of State also said that when he spoke to the President of China, Xi Jinping, he also asked him to contribute to ending this war.
While at the Security Council on January 20, 2025, President Putin appreciated that Trump had thought about these talks, adding that it would only be possible if they were based on mutual respect and not harming the interests of each side.
