United States President Joe Biden announced on January 10, 2025, that he would extend the stay in the country for 18 months for 900,000 immigrants.
These immigrants include 600,000 from Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine and Sudan; countries affected by war or crimes stemming from political unrest.
In 2021, the President also extended the stay in the United States for immigrants when he took office. In total, more than one million people have been deported under his administration, from 17 countries.
The president made the decision as Donald Trump prepared to deport more undocumented immigrants, preparing to lead the United States again from January 20, 2025.
When Trump was in office from 2017 to 2021, he tried to reverse the decision of his predecessor’s administration to temporarily deport undocumented immigrants, wanting to deport them, but the courts rejected it.
Trump will not have the authority to deport immigrants President Biden has deported within 18 months, because the courts would also overturn him, as they have done in the past.
